We look at your doors, gates, and stairs as “gateways.” Do you have large patio doors, garage man doors, side and back gates, or walkout deck stairs that need to be built up to? Is there a height change from the house to the landscape or should there be an arbour that defines an access point?
We treat your windows like picture frames. We identify which windows you look out of most—like the one over the kitchen sink or the view from your living room—and design the landscape specifically to “show off” its best features from those angles. Or, which windows are bedrooms that you want to move social areas away from so the kids can sleep while you socialize?

No Path: Keeps the area open and grassy, allowing you to wander anywhere.
Full Path: A solid, paved walkway (like stone or concrete) that is easy to walk on in any shoes and clearly directs guests where to go.

How do we organize and separate your yard into “rooms” based on what you love to do?
A quiet spot for your living room and comfortable furniture. How many people on average do you want to host in this area and where do you see it being placed?

These are your “specialty” spots—think of a vegetable garden, a dedicated fire pit area, a putting green, an outdoor bar, a movie screen, the hot tub or pool, a dog run for the pets, a yoga platform, a secluded reading nook, a morning coffee patio, or a single hidden garden bench. Open Floor Plan: Like a modern house, the zones flow into each other with no barriers. The yard feels much larger and more flexible.
Distinct Rooms: We use plants, fences, walls, or furniture to create clear borders. When you move from the “Dining Zone” to the “Relaxation Zone,” it feels like entering a new room. You can also create distinct zones by adding in custom inlays to your patio or deck to create permanent area rugs or borders around the dining room, fire pit, cooking zone and more.
Visual Barriers: We use “soft walls” (like tall grasses or hedges) or “hard walls” (like stone partitions or constructed screens) to create total privacy between areas, neighbours, or views to the neighborhood you don’t want to see.
Height Changes: This is a sophisticated way to separate spaces without using walls. By adding a raised deck, a mid-level landing, or a sunken patio, we create a natural feeling of moving into a new “room” just by stepping up or down.
Which zones do you want separated and how do you want to create separation…the subtlety of decking or stone texture changes or the dramatics of visual barriers and height changes…or no separation at all?
This determines what you see (and what you don’t) from different vantage points in your home and yard.
We keep areas and sight lines clear by using low-profile plants and avoiding tall walls or structures. This preserves wide-open views from your windows and seating areas, making the entire property feel more expansive and airy. Where do you want to maintain low views?
This is a “peek-a-boo” style. We use mid-level plants or decorative screens and walls that allow you to see that there is more to the garden beyond and other areas, but without revealing everything at once. For maximum intimacy, we use tall plantings, solid walls, structures, or privacy screens to completely block the view between certain areas. This ensures that your private spaces stay hidden from neighbors or other zones in the yard. Where do you want Private Views?
